The daily newspaper “La Repubblica” reported in its Business & Finance section that lifestyles in Italy are changing. Even though red wines are still ahead in terms of overall consumption, white wines, especially sparklers, are gaining ground.
Reasons for this trend are linked to Italians eating out of the house more often, the rise of drinking wine as aperitivo, or before dinner drink, and the increasing popularity of wine bars. These shifts mean that more Italians are seeking out wines which are accessible, aromatic and supple, to be enjoyed on their own or as an accompaniment to a light and quick meal.
It was also noted that consumers want a powerful link between a wine and the region from which it was produced. This is linked to a trend of revaluation of native varietals and in the promotion of new wine growing terroirs.
